The world’s most rare marine animal is on the borderline of extinction. Discovered in 1958, the vaquita has only been in existence for a little over half of a century. Due to the illegal use of gillnets and fishing operations within Mexico’s Gulf of California, as few as 30 vaquitas still survive.
The vaquita is a mammal that resembles that of a dolphin- vaquita meaning “little cow” in Spanish. They are shown with a dark ring around their eyes, and a thin dark line around its lips that forms a permanent smile. Along with being the most rare, they are the smallest living cetacean- weighing only up to 120 pounds, and growing only up to 5 feet in length.
CIRVA, an international team of scientists established by the Mexican government, estimated that there were only about 200 vaquitas in existence as of 2012. By 2014, fewer than 100 survived, estimating that over half of their population had been demolished in only two years. As of February 2017, only 30 vaquitas have been estimated to still be living, meaning that the number has declined since.
The issue we see with the vaquitas is that they are often accidentally killed. Since they love the shallow waters of the Gulf, they are often swimming near the top. Along the shallow surface, fishermen (specifically hunting for totoaba) set up gillnets. Though the fisherman are looking to catch the totoabas, they often kill the vaquitas when they get tangled in the net, causing them to drown. There have been a few limitations in hopes to save these animals, and cut back on the activity of illegal fishing. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto declared an emergency two-year ban on gillnets throughout the range of the vaquita, beginning in May 2015.
The totoaba that is meant to be caught by the fishermen is a high commodity for the Chinese people. It’s swim bladder is seen as a tremendous health food in China, therefore making it in high demand. They are over 6 feet long, and 300 pounds; their swim bladders selling for thousands of dollars on the blackmarket. This craze in China has become known as the “aquatic cocaine” to the Chinese people, as they literally smuggle the bladder from Mexico to China.
Is the $2,000+ swim bladder really worth pushing two species into extinction?

Youtube has come a long way since its debut back in 2005. The first youtube video was titled Me at the Zoo. The video went up on April 23, 2005. It was uploaded by Youtube co-founder Jawed Karim, and showed him at the San Diego Zoo. Youtube began as an angel-funded enterprise that started in a makeshift garage.
Nowadays, Youtube is filled with game let’s plays and vlog and reaction videos. Youtube has now become a breeding ground for new people to become famous. Pewdiepie, Jacksepticeye, Smosh, and Markiplier all had their big break on the video streaming service. Now people are considering Youtube a full time job with certain youtubers making millions.
In 2016, Markiplier had an estimated $5 million dollar salary, and he had only 16.8 million subscribers, which makes him number 12 on the list of youtubers with the highest number of subscribers. It seems now that the next generation of celebrities could be made on Youtube. From comedians to gamers to beauty vloggers, they could be our future celebrities. More and more people these days are seeing Youtube not as a hobby but as a full-time job.
Youtube is now the 3rd most visited website in the world. Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day, and Youtube gets over 30 million visitors every single day. Not to mention the fact that 300 hours of video are uploaded to Youtube every minute, EVERY MINUTE! Those statistics aren’t made up, and they aren’t altered. Those are actual statistics that Youtube has released, and it has been predicted that in 2025, half of the viewers under 32 will not subscribe to a pay-TV service.
With those kinds of statistics, it’s no surprise that people are seemingly skyrocketing to fame. I’m even considering starting a gaming channel right now, but before you go crazy, let me tell you the downside. It’s not all that great. For starters, Youtube is extremely competitive, which makes it extremely hard to become famous on Youtube. Unless a video of yours goes completely viral it is going to be hard to become the next Youtube sensation. Now, that’s not to say that it isn’t possible. It’s just going to be extremely hard.
Even though it is extremely unlikely that you become Youtube famous overnight, you could still reach the level of say Markiplier or Jacksepticeye. It’s not going to be as easy as most people these days think. The ones that do make it have to work hard to keep their views up and gain new viewers in order to keep their channel alive. So, if you’re trying to become Youtube famous just know that not all Youtube channels succeed, and that the ones that do, don’t always stay that way.

Freshmen. You’re awkward. You talk a lot. You try to act older than you are; and you’re no longer the top of the foodchain. We all remember how it was to be the youngest of the school. It’s a very exciting time, but there is often a gap from what you expect to what the actual reality of high school is. I asked a few freshman what they had expected of high school before they started, and what the true reality was since they’ve started. They didn’t seem too interested in participating but, these were a few of their responses:
“I thought there would be a load of homework and people would be jerks. I was right about the homework and only some people were jerks.”
“I expected high school to be really stressful. I was correct.”
“When I first came to high school, I thought it would be really hard with lots of homework. But, I was wrong. It’s the opposite!”
“I thought there was going to be a lot of homework and there is.”
“I expected nobody to notice freshman. I expected to get a lot of homework, and that the teachers would be tougher. I also expected to get pushed around a lot, I hoped that the teachers wouldn’t be too mean . . .
Upperclassmen do notice you. Only a couple of teachers give you a ton of homework. Some teachers are tough, but most are pretty chill. I don’t really get pushed around. The teachers aren’t too mean.”
“I expected high school to be hard, but I didn’t really expect the teachers to be mean. Although high school is kind of like I expected, some teachers can be mean. But, they are mainly nice.”
“I thought that I would do good in high school and that the teachers would give a lot of homework. They don’t give a lot of homework.”
“I thought that I wouldn’t have enough time to get from class to class. But, we have plenty of time to get to each class.”

I asked 1 athlete from each Fall sport these same questions. What position do you play? When did you start playing? What do you enjoy about the sport? Why do you play the sport? Do you have any role models? Do you think you’ll play after high school?
Allyson Hardiek is on the cross country team. She started playing this year. She enjoys how all the running keeps her in shape. Her biggest role model is JoAnna Shultz. She doesn’t foresee herself running cross country after high school. The last thing she had to say was “Join cross country. It really ain’t dat bad.”
Rachel Jackman is on the volleyball team. Her position is middle. She started playing in junior high. When asked about why she plays, her response was, “I play because I like hitting it in peoples’ faces and our coach is awesome.” She said her role models are Tinley Mette, Leah Mayhaus, and Caitlyn White. She said it would be awesome if she played after high school but doesn’t know if she will.
Patrick Tkachuck plays on the soccer team. His position switches between stopper and sweeper. He started playing his freshman year. He said, “I play to hit some zingers with Donovan Delaney.” When asked about his future soccer career he said, “You can see me in next year’s world cup playing for Wisconsin.” The last thing he had to say was, “I like to live my life by this philosophy, 'Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, can’t be fooled again'."
Nathan Hill is a member of the golf team. He started golfing his freshman year. He said he plays because it’s fun and the team is hilarious. His biggest role model is Dustin Johnson. He said he expects to play after high school.
Noah Teasley plays baseball. His position is short-stop. He started playing when he was a little kid. His response to why he plays was, “I play because I feel alive out on the field.” One of his role models is Yadier Molina. He expects to play in college, and says he hopes one day he’ll make it to the MLB. The last thing he had to say was “Go, Cardinals.”
